These tips may help if you suffer from dry mouth:

  • Add ice to drinks or try sucking ice cubes to soothe a dry mouth
  • You may find eating cold food more soothing than hot food
  • Keep food moist with gravies and sauces to aid swallowing
  • Clean your mouth after eating with a soft toothbrush and a mild toothpaste with fluoride to cleanse your mouth. You could also consider the use of an alcohol-free mouthwash
  • Consider the use of a saliva replacement gel or spray, such as Oralieve, to help moisturise and maintain the natural balance of your mouth
  • Avoid very dry foods, including chocolate and pastry, which can stick to the top of your mouth
  • If your mouth is sore avoid salty or spicy food that may sting or rough textured food such as toast
  • If you wear a denture make sure that you remember to remove them for as long as you can at night and clean them with a specialist cleanser to remove bacteria
  • Tell your doctor, pharmacist and dental team about your dry mouth and ask for advice
